3 Bacapres Bicara Gagasan was a live episode of Mata Najwa, an Indonesian television talk show. It featured three of Indonesia's presidential candidates for 2024: Anies Baswedan, Ganjar Pranowo, and Prabowo Subianto. On 19 September 2023, the episode was broadcast live from Gadjah Mada University to a studio audience of over 5000 people.

3 Bacapres Bicara Gagasan was hosted by Najwa Shihab and produced for her television talk show, Mata Najwa. It was one of many events to celebrate the 68th anniversary of Gadjah Mada University's Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.[1][2] It was held at Grha Sabha Permana (GSP) (Gadjah Mada University) on 19 September 2023, from 3 PM WIB to 10 PM WIB (UTC+07:00) and was broadcast live on YouTube.[1][3] This episode featured three 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates. The candidates were Anies Baswedan, Ganjar Pranowo, and Prabowo Subianto. They were invited to explain their views on issues that had come into the spotlight in Indonesia.[1][4]

It was opened by a speech from rector Ova Emilia, who conveyed five national messages from Gadjah Mada University as the first state university founded by the Indonesian state after becoming sovereign, and encouraged all contestants in the 2024 election, and the entire nation, to commit to maintaining Indonesian values based on the principles of popular sovereignty, diversity, multiculturalism, national sovereignty, and social welfare.[5] She added that the event should raise awareness about the importance of political education in order to realize the campus' contribution to the process of political maturation and the improvement of the quality of democracy.[5]

The episode featured comedian Pandji Pragiwaksono in a scene that where he roasted Erick Thohir due to his double position as chairman of Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) and State-owned enterprises of Indonesia (BUMN) by comparing him to a kid who knows to finish their homework before playing football.[6]

"Pak Erick Thohir ini lucu, jadi ketua PSSI, seakan-akan kerjaannya di BUMN itu sudah selesai. Pak Erick Thohir, bocah aja tahu, selesain dulu PR-nya lalu main bola."

At the end of each presidential candidate's session, they were asked to stand in front of a large mirror and convey a message as a self-reflection on becoming President of Indonesia.[7] Prabowo is the only candidate who refused to do it and received criticism from psychiatrist Hanna Rahmi, who said "refusing to look in the mirror shows a tendency towards denial, lack of self-confidence, and fear of failure."[8][9]

Broadcast

3 Bacapres Bicara Gagasan was broadcast on 19 September 2023 and was available for viewing via live streaming on YouTube.[3] Viewers who had purchased e-tickets were able to register at 2:30 PM WIB.[4] iNews Sleman reported that at 6 PM WIB the episode had reached 43.000 viewers on social media.[3] It drew an enthusiastic crowd of students from various universities who came to meet and take photos with their chosen presidential candidate.[10] Some Indonesian internet users also said the episode would be a good way for the public to get to know the presidential candidates more deeply, especially their ideas and views.[11]

Reception

An analysis from Drone Emprit with a method of approaching each set of keywords to represent certain monitoring entities on social media from 19 to 21 September reported that Anies Baswedan was the most talked-about candidate after the episode.[11] He received both positive and negative sentiments that focused on his speaking ability, which is considered good but too wordy.[11] Various accounts that supported him were seen in the comments section more than the accounts that supported his rival candidate.[11] His spotlight most likely talked about tax audits, the nickname Wakanda for Indonesia, and the issue of Najwa Shihab as his success team.[11]

Criticism

Ganjar Pranowo drew a criticism and his only negative response due to his argument that talked about Najwa Shihab who was the ten best graduate from University of Indonesia but became a journalist which was considered insulting her.[12][11] Some of internet user said that he was doing a blunder statement and said that Shihab still looked annoyed when he invited Pandji Pragiwaksono to chat before leaving the stage.[12] Shihab later clarified that she did not feel offended by the statement because she thought Ganjar was discussing about the importance of the education world being filled with the best people.[13] His positive response focused on his ability on making firm argument and solution in answering questions from Shihab, and as the leading candidates in the event with a total of 50 percent of votes on Twitter.[14] Ganjar spotlight topic mostly talked about his actions belittled the profession of journalist, party puppet, and the Maghrib call to prayer in which he starred.[11]

Prabowo Subianto had the smallest number of supporters during the debate event.[11] He drew a response from Generation Z with many of them saying that his appearance looks cute, and supported him to win in the 2024 Presidential election.[15] His positive response focused on his ability in answering the question that was considered honest, while his negative response focused on his nervous and panic attack during his session which drew some sympathy narration about him.[11] Prabowo spotlight topic mostly talked about Golkar's corruption and Zulkifli Hasan.[11]
