An illustration of a woman fisting her own vagina

Fisting—also known as fist fucking (FF),[1] handballing, and brachiovaginal or brachioproctic insertion[2]—is a sexual activity that involves inserting one or more hands into the vagina (vaginal fisting) or rectum (anal fisting).[3] Fisting may be performed on oneself (self-fisting)[1] or performed on one person by another. People who engage in fisting are often called "fisters".[1]

History

Fisting's emergence as a popular sexual practice is commonly attributed to gay male culture and it may not have existed until the twentieth century.[4][5][6] Robert Morgan Lawrence, a sex educator, however, believes the practice dates back thousands of years.[7] The most famous fisting club in the world was the Catacombs, located in San Francisco, which operated during the 1970s and 1980s.[8] The Handball Express was another such club.[9] Crisco was commonly used as a lubricant, before more specialized personal lubricants became available.

Anal fisting performed by a man on himself

In the 1980s, it was assumed that unprotected fisting—which often produces small injuries to the anus, permitting microorganisms access to the blood—was an easy route for transmission of HIV. This, combined with sexual squeamishness towards the public fisting culture in gay establishments of San Francisco, led gay writer Randy Shilts to successfully campaign for the closure of venues, such as gay bathhouses and sex clubs, that openly permitted it.[10]

The San Francisco South of Market Leather History Alley consists of four works of art along Ringold Alley honoring leather culture; it opened in 2017.[11][12] One of the works of art is metal bootprints along the curb which honor 28 people who were an important part of the leather communities of San Francisco; those honored include Steve McEachern, owner of the fisting club the Catacombs, and Bert Herman, leader of the fisting community, author, and publisher.[11][12] Modern performance art (especially extreme performance art) can adopt fisting activities such as Ron Athey's Solar Anus (1999) which challenges the feminization and sexual roles associated with male penetration by both giving and receiving penetration through self-fisting.[13]

Techniques

The "silent duck" hand position

Hands

A common technique, particularly for beginners, is to extend four fingers straight with thumb tucked beneath. Some refer to this technique as the "silent duck" or "duck-billing", because the hand position resembles a duck beak.[2][1]

Four fingers inside a vagina

In more vigorous forms of fisting, often referred to as "punching" or "punchfisting", the hand is partly or fully clenched into a fist before, during, and/or after insertion.[14]

Taking two hands at once is referred to as "double fisting". In the case of double fisting, pleasure may be derived more from the stretching of the anus or vagina than from the in-and-out movement of hands.[2]

Oftentimes, hands are inserted until or just past the wrist. Some experienced fisters enjoy deeper penetration, sometimes referred to as "depth play", in which hands may be inserted as far as the elbow.[15][16][17]

Sometimes a penetrative partner may insert their penis or a sex toy at the same time as their hand(s), to masturbate inside the receptive partner's rectum or vagina.

While rare, some experienced fisters are capable of taking three hands.[15]

Lubricants

Lubricants designed specifically for fisting or with fisting in mind are widely available in some countries. Fisting lubes sold in the United States include X Lube,[18] K Lube,[19] FFäusten,[20] Fistpowder,[21] and Slam Dunk.[22]

Sex toys

Fisters commonly use dildos to loosen the vagina or anus before or during a fisting session.[23] Some companies sell dildos that replicate the appearance and sensation of one or more hands. Examples of fist-shaped toy manufacturers include Hankey's Toys,[24][25] Squarepeg Toys,[26][27] and John Thomas Toys.[28]

Terminology

Common fisting-related terms include:

  • Fister: anyone who engages in fisting; or, depending on context, a penetrative partner in a session involving two or more people.[1]
  • Fistee: a receptive partner in a session involving two or more people.[1]
  • Rosebud: rectal prolapse induced by fisting or other ass play (named due to the prolapse's resemblance to a rose flower).[29][30]
  • Prolapse: a synonym for rosebud; or, depending on context, it may refer specifically to more severe cases of rectal prolapse in which the walls of the rectum protrude several inches or more.[31]
  • Bloom: "bloom" is used as a verb (e.g. "blooming") to describe the act of inducing a rosebud or prolapse, or the moment when a rosebud or prolapse becomes visible.[29]

Risks

Fisting can cause laceration or perforation of the vagina, perineum, rectum, or colon, resulting in serious injury[32] and even death.[33][34][35][36] In addition, sexual activities that forces air into the vagina can lead to a fatal air embolism, predominantly during pregnancy.[37] Participants are advised to use latex gloves, lubricant and keep their nails trimmed.[38]

A 2021 study found that men who practiced anal fisting were more likely to experience fecal incontinence than men who engaged in other forms of anal sex. 18.1% of men who engaged in fisting experienced some form of fecal incontinence in the last month, compared to 7.2% of men who did not engage in fisting.[39][40][41] However, more research is required to establish a causal link.[41]

As anal fisting may cause damage to the rectal mucosa, it may increase the likelihood of transmission of sexually transmitted infections.[42]

Fisting has been depicted or referenced in art, music, cinema and other forms of popular culture. Examples include:

Other

  • In the handkerchief code, a red handkerchief (or other red apparel) indicates interest in fisting.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, fisting is legal to perform;[71] however, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) considers publication of fisting material to be grounds for prosecution under the Obscene Publications Act 1959.[72] Despite the CPS's guidance, in the case of R v Peacock in 2012, Michael Peacock was found not guilty of breaching the Obscene Publications Act for selling DVDs containing anal fisting.[73] There was also an unsuccessful extreme pornography prosecution in 2012 where it was argued by the prosecution that images of anal fisting constitute extreme pornography and thus are illegal to possess because the act is "likely to result in serious injury to a person's anus, breasts or genitals".[71]

United States

In the United States, according to attorney Allan Gelbard there is nothing "per se illegal" about any pornography so long as it is not child pornography; however, it can be found to be obscene. Fisting is on the Cambria List, a list of sex acts which may be prosecutable under U.S. obscenity law, created by lawyer Paul Cambria in 2001 to help producers avoid obscenity lawsuits.[74] However, as of 2019, the Cambria List is generally regarded as obsolete within the pornography industry.[75]
