Banani is a residential and commercial neighbourhood and a thana of Dhaka, often considered a part of the neighbouring Gulshan area. It hosts five-star hotels, upscale restaurants, classy malls, luxury apartments, established and well-known private English-medium and international schools, and headquarters of various banks and domestic and multinational companies. Banani is considered an important central business district. Its business scene holds increasing importance compared to areas like Mohakhali, Bashundhara, Uttara, Kawran Bazar, Tejgaon and Mirpur. Banani's commercial landscape is only third to established Central Business Districts of Gulshan and especially Motijheel, the nation's largest and most important CBD.

Geography

Banani is located at 23°47′42″N 90°24′17″E / 23.7950°N 90.4047°E / 23.7950; 90.4047. It has a lake called Banani Lake.[1] Korail slum is located on the border of Banani.[2] It is a part of Ward No. 19 of DNCC.[3][4]

History

In November 2016 Dhaka North City Corporation demolished the home of former East Pakistan Governor Abdul Monem Khan.[5] In 2019, 19 were killed in the FR Tower fire.[6]

Population

According to the 2011 Bangladesh census, the population of Banani was 24,718.[7]
