Tiger meat is a raw beef dish. Recipes vary, but common ingredients include: raw beef, raw egg, onion, salt, pepper, and other seasonings. It is sometimes also referred to as a "Cannibal Sandwich." It is traditionally consumed at Christmas, especially in Wisconsin.
Preparation involves mixing the ingredients together in a bowl, and then serving it on crackers. It is closely related to steak tartare, and is common in Midwestern US states with significant German populations, such as North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota.[1] It was first introduced in America by Russian and German immigrants.[2]
The origin of the name is not known.[2] In southern Brazil this kind of meat is called 'carne de onça', meaning jaguar meat.
Meat from actual tigers
In 2005, a restaurant in China reportedly sold donkey meat as the meat of a tiger, with a waiter erroneously advising a customer that the owner's good connections with a tiger park allowed him access to dead tigers for their meat. Following a police raid, the restaurant admitted the meat was from donkeys.[3]
