Hubert Kretzschmar (born 1954) is a German visual artist and graphic designer. He is known for his iconic album cover artwork and pioneering use of digital technology in design and art. His work is recognized as having influenced artists and designers in Germany and around the world.
Early life and education
Kretzschmar was born in post-WWII Karlsruhe, Germany to teenaged parents. His brother, Peter, was born in 1953 and Hubert in 1954. Through his father's work as translator for the American occupying armed forces, Kretzschmar was exposed to American pop culture in the form of comic books, toys and movies. Kretzschmar spent much of his childhood drawing and painting, encouraged by teachers who recognized his talent. After completing his primary education, Kretzschmar apprenticed as a graphic draftsman in both commercial and applied art, working with Manfred Griesser in Karlsruhe and as photo assistant for Volkart Armin Wölfl in Essen.
In addition to his apprenticeships, Kretzschmar attended the Folkwang School in Essen, where he studied painting, layout, illustration, and visual communication under the tutelage of renowned figures in art and design, including art director Willy Fleckhaus, abstract artist Helmut Sundhausen, and protégés of Josef Albers.
Kretzschmar also studied at the Free International University for Creativity and Interdisciplinary Research (FIU) in Düsseldorf. Under the guidance of legendary artist Josef Beuys, Kretzschmar was exposed to interdisciplinary approaches to art and design, which would later inform his work in technology and computer graphics.
Move to New York
In 1977, Kretzschmar relocated to Manhattan, where he has since had a successful career as an illustrator, photographer, and designer.
Upon arriving in New York, Kretzschmar became involved in the city's downtown art and music scenes. Connecting with other artists and designers, he began to work on commercial projects for magazines and record labels. His interest in synthesizers and electronic music led to collaborations with musicians such as Axel Gross (later of Brian Eno) and studios like the Public Access Synthesizer Studio.
Kretzschmar's album cover designs are notable. He has created iconic artwork for legendary musicians throughout his career, including Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Kraftwerk, Iggy Pop and Brian Eno. Some of Kretzschmar's best-known album covers include Kraftwerk's "Electric Cafe" and The Rolling Stones' "Some Girls."
As an illustrator and photographer, Kretzschmar has created editorial work for publications such as Rolling Stone, Playboy, and The New York Times. He is known for his dynamic and innovative approach to design, which often incorporates bold typography, striking imagery, and unexpected techniques.
Computer pioneer
Kretzschmar was an early adopter of digital technology in design and art. In the 1970s and 1980s, he pioneered the use of videography as an illustrative tool for print media and publication and he applied computer graphics, holography, and immersive sound technology in his work as a designer and artist.
Graffiti documentation
Kretzschmar's extensive of New York City's vibrant graffiti art scene from 1981 to 1987 brought him into contact with some of the most talented and influential graffiti and fine artists of the time. His photographs, recordings, memorabilia and designs documenting the graffiti subculture and its artists have been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications.
Kretzschmar has documented the works of UGA artists Phase2, Coco, Mico, Snake1, and he has worked with Galozzi Laplaca, Patti Astor's Fun Gallery, Barbara Braathen and Stefan Eins's Fashion Moda gallery. He also documented the works of artists A1, Delta2, and Toxic, among others.
During this period, Kretzschmar was associated with New York artists Kenny Scharf, Keith Haring, and Jean Michel Basquiat, and he worked closely with Rammellzee, a graffiti artist and hip-hop pioneer known for his "gothic futurism" style.
Kretzschmar's involvement in the graffiti art scene had a lasting impact on his own artistic practice, and he continued to explore urban art and street culture in his later work.
Legacy
Kretzschmar's works in applied, commercial and fine art and design are considered iconic and influential, featuring regularly in international exhibitions and publications. His role in documenting the graffiti art scene in New York City in the 1980s is foundational. In the 2020s, Kretzschmar continues to produce innovative work in response to contemporary events, showcasing an ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of art and design. His artistic response to the Covid pandemic has appeared in several exhibitions.
Since 2008, Kretzschmar has volunteered as an art teacher at the St. Thomas Choir School in New York, passing on his knowledge and experience to the next generation.
