Puteri Indonesia (Javanese: (Hanacaraka) ꦦꦸꦠꦺꦫꦶꦆꦤ꧀ꦢꦺꦴꦤꦺꦱ; lit. 'Princess of Indonesia') is a national beauty pageant in Indonesia that sends its winners to represent the country at Miss International, one of the Big Four international beauty pageants.[6] Puteri Indonesia is traditionally held in March, alongside the celebration of International Women's Day.[7][8][9] The pageant also sends representatives to Miss Supranational and Miss Charm pageant, by giving the Puteri Indonesia Lingkungan and Puteri Indonesia Pariwisata titles to the 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up respectively.[3]
The current winner is Farhana Nariswari Wisandana of West Java 1 who was crowned on 19 May 2023 at the Jakarta Convention Center, Jakarta. She represented Indonesia at Miss International 2023.[10]
History
The pageant is run by the Puteri Indonesia Organization, based in Jakarta, and owned by Puteri Indonesia Charities, Inc., with the president-owners being the Royal Highest Family of Surakarta Sunanate, Princess Mooryati Soedibyo[1][2] and Princess Putri Kuswisnuwardhani.[3][11]
The pageant was established in 1992 and is considered as the oldest national beauty pageant in Indonesia, with the first Puteri Indonesia being Indira Paramarini Sudiro who was crowned as Puteri Indonesia 1992 and won Miss ASEAN 1992 title.[12] Where Puteri Indonesia 1996, Alya Rohali was held her title for the longest reign in the pageant history, from 1996 to 1999.[13]
The pageant was founded to choose a winner to compete in Miss Universe 1993, but by Miss Universe 1996, the winner was forced to withdraw from competing at the Miss Universe pageant by the former First Lady, Mrs. Tien Suharto.[14] Puteri Indonesia winner was again sent to the Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Supranational, after receiving support from Megawati Soekarnoputri, the first female President of Indonesia. Since then, the pageant has been held consecutively every year, with the winner sent to participate in international beauty pageants. Starting with Artika Sari Devi Kusmayadi at Miss Universe 2005 in Thailand, followed by Rahma Landy Sjahruddin at Miss International 2007 in Japan, Alessandra Khadijah Usman at Miss Asia Pacific World 2011 in Chile, Cokorda Istri Krisnanda Widani competed at Miss Supranational 2013 in Belarus, Novia Indriani Mamuaja competed at Miss Grand International 2013 in Thailand, and Lulu Zaharani Krisna Widodo will compete at Miss Charm 2024.[15]
The Puteri Indonesia pageant is held annually in March, alongside International Women's Day in Jakarta.[16][17] Candidate selection starts at provincial level, with those chosen competing in the national pageant. Puteri Indonesia Organization is supported by the President and the Cabinet. In 2019, Joko Widodo announced the Puteri Indonesia as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Indonesia,[18] which carries the values of Indonesian culture and society togetherness, to celebrate the role of women in the creative industry, environment, tourism, education and social awareness.[19] Generally, the final coronation night of the pageant was annually broadcast on Indosiar, but the 2007 and 2019–present edition was broadcast on SCTV, which means both television networks owned by Surya Citra Media (SCM) are the official broadcasters of Puteri Indonesia.[20] In February 2023, Puteri Indonesia Organization lost its Miss Universe license and got Miss Charm license. So since 2023, Puteri Indonesia also get Miss International Indonesia title, Puteri Indonesia Lingkungan as Miss Supranational Indonesia, and Puteri Indonesia Pariwisata as Miss Charm Indonesia.[21][22]
