Mom's Spaghetti is a restaurant in Detroit, Michigan. It serves spaghetti-related items and is known for being opened by rapper Eminem in his hometown. The restaurant's name and premise are inspired by a line from his song "Lose Yourself" from the soundtrack to the 2002 motion picture 8 Mile, where he says "His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy / There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti." The restaurant also contains a merchandise shop, The Trailer, that houses the Robin suit from the music video of the single "Without Me".[2][3]

History

Before a brick-and-mortar restaurant was established, Eminem worked with the restaurant company Union Joints to make pop-up restaurants to promote his album Revival in 2017.[2] One of them was at The Shelter.[4] In 2018, a Mom's Spaghetti stand was set up at Coachella.[5][6] Stands were also seen at Firefly Music Festival and Governors Ball Music Festival.[7] Eminem also worked with Union Joints to donate 400 meals to frontline workers at Henry Ford Hospital and Detroit Receiving Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.[6][8][9][10]

Eminem opened the restaurant at 5 PM[11] on September 29, 2021. To promote the restaurant, he aired a 30-second advertisement twice at the 9 AM hour on WXYZ-TV, one of Detroit's main television stations, on the 24th.[12] A telephone number ((313)-888-8388) flashed on the bottom of the screen, which, when called, added that there would be a merchandise store on the restaurant's second floor.[11][13] Eminem personally served the first ten customers himself during the opening.[1][14][15][16]

A temporary Mom's Spaghetti location at 820 S. Spring St. was opened in Los Angeles for Super Bowl LVI, from February 9 to 13.[17] It was a collaboration with the delivery company Postmates, which delivered orders in the LA area.[18][19][20] A New York City pop-up, in a collaboration with Shopify, was opened to celebrate the 20th anniversary of 8 Mile.[21] The pop-up also contained recreations of areas from the movie.[22]

The restaurant sells four varieties of spaghetti: plain, with meatballs, with vegan meatballs, (made of black turtle beans and quinoa)[18] and spaghetti bolognese. Spaghetti (and spaghetti bolognese) sandwiches are also sold. Extra meatballs, garlic bread, and cold drinks can additionally be ordered.[23][24][25] The spaghetti is served in an oyster pail.[26]

On October 24, 2023, Eminem announced on Instagram that he was going to sell Mom's Spaghetti tomato sauce online.[27] They were made available to pre-order on the 26th, with shipping expected on the 29th.[26][28][29] It sold out within a few hours.[30] The 25 oz (710 g) jars sold for US$13, each, while a two-pack is US$25.[31][32][33] It contains "ground tomatoes, tomato paste, onions, sugar, garlic, carrots, canola oil, 'spices,' sea salt, and red wine vinegar."[34] A review by Mashed concluded that it had less calories, sodium, and fat than most popular sauces, but more sugar.[35] During Eminem's collaboration with video game Fortnite in late 2023, a Mom's Spaghetti cosmetic item was availabe.[36]
