- 1835 - Charles Darwin, during the second voyage of the HMS Beagle, experienced an earthquake at Valdivia, Chile. After the quake, the local mussel beds had been raised above the high tide line. Darwin had witnessed the gradual elevation of the continent as theorized by Charles Lyell.
