- 1846 - J. K. Murphy donated some fossils to the Smithsonian Institution of a large theropod dinosaur discovered in Washington D.C., USA by workers attempting to install a sewage system. The specimen was catalogued as NMNH 3049 and known by the nickname Capitalsaurus.
- 1858 - Eugène Dubois was born in Eijsden, Netherlands.
- 1878 - Édouard Lartet was born in Séissan, France.
- 1930 - Edwin Tulley Newton died.
- 1956 - Tim Flannery was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
- 1998 - Capitalsaurus was recognized as the official dinosaur of Washington, D.C.
- 2000 - The site in Washington, D.C. where Capitalsaurus was discovered was named Capitalsaurus Court.
- 2001 - Washington, D.C. mayor Anthony A. Williams declared January 28th a local holiday, "Capitalsaurus Day".
