Rescue Me is a British romantic comedy television series produced by Tiger Aspect Productions and broadcast on BBC One in 2002. It was created, and principally written, by David Nicholls and stars Sally Phillips as Katie Nash, a woman who is recovering from a divorce while at the same time writing relationship features for Eden, the women's magazine she works on. The series was filmed from November to December 2001.[1] It ran for six episodes, averaging 3.4 million viewers and a 15% audience share in its Sunday night timeslot. The low ratings meant it was not recommissioned for a second series, leaving an unresolved cliffhanger.[2] Nicholls had written four episodes of the unmade second series before discovering Rescue Me had been cancelled. As a result, he took a break from screenwriting to concentrate on his debut novel Starter for Ten.[3] A cover version of "Rescue Me", performed by Oliver Darley, is the series theme tune.[4]

Synopsis

The series revolves around the lives of the staff and patients at a fictional NHS hospital in Leeds, focusing in particular on the relationships between three female nurses and three male doctors.

The show's central characters include Maxine Donnelly (played by Sally Phillips), a quirky, neurotic nurse who is struggling to find love; Dr. Stuart McElroy (played by Daniel Ryan), a charming but commitment-phobic surgeon; and Dr. Tony Whitman (played by David Tennant), a handsome and suave physician who is also a bit of a womanizer.

Other characters include Maxine's best friend and fellow nurse Jane (played by Kate Miles), who is having an affair with Dr. Whitman; Dr. Sarah Chadwick (played by Sarah Parish), a no-nonsense obstetrician who clashes with Dr. McElroy; and Dr. Tom Kent (played by Shaun Dingwall), a kind-hearted but socially awkward junior doctor.

Throughout the series, the characters navigate the ups and downs of their personal and professional lives, facing challenges such as workplace politics, difficult patients, and romantic entanglements. Along the way, they form close bonds and learn important lessons about love, friendship, and the importance of supporting one another in times of need.
