The Roman Catholic Diocese of Surabaya (Latin: Dioecesis Surabayana) is a suffragan Latin diocese, located on Java island, in Indonesia and administers parishes in the northern and western parts of East Java province.
Its episcopal see is at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Surabaya.
The diocese is currently in the period of sede vacante, as its former Bishop, Mgr. Vincentius Sutikno Wisaksono died on 10 August 2023, which left the bishopric throne vacant.
History
- Established on February 15, 1928 as the Apostolic Prefecture of Surabaia, on territory split off from the then Apostolic Vicariate of Batavia (now Metropolitan Archdiocese of Jakarta)
- October 16, 1941: Promoted as Apostolic Vicariate of Surabaia, still a missionary pre-diocesan jurisdiction but hence entitled to a titular bishop.
- Promoted on January 3, 1961 as Diocese of Surabaia
- August 22, 1973: Renamed as Diocese of Surabaya
