South Dakota's 5th legislative district is one of 35 districts in the South Dakota Legislature. Each district is represented by 1 senator and 2 representatives. In the Senate, it has been represented by Republican Lee Schoenbeck since 2019. In the House, it has been represented by Republicans Hugh Bartels since 2017 and Byron Callies since 2023.[1]
Geography
The district is located within the city of Watertown in Codington County, located in northeastern South Dakota. The district is completely surrounded by the 4th district.[2]

South Dakota legislators are elected to two-year terms, with each permitted to serve a maximum of four consecutive two-year terms.[3] Elections are held every even-numbered year.
