The Storage Resource Management (SRM) technology was initiated by the Scientific Data Management Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

Storage Resource Managers (SRMs) coordinate storage allocation, stream the data between sites, and enforce secure interfaces to the storage systems (i.e., deal with the special security requirements of each storage system at its home institution).

The SRM specification has evolved as a common standard in the high-energy physics (HEP) and high-energy nuclear physics (HENP) communities, such as the worldwide Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Computing Grid (WLCG) that supports ATLAS and Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS). SRMs provide lifetime management of accessed files. SRMs limit external access to all storage systems through a standard SRM interface.

Usage

The SRM interfaces have been cooperatively defined, and multiple implementations of the same have been developed in the United States and Europe. LBNL has introduced the concepts. Several implementations have been deployed in various applications, including HEP, HENP, and ESG, as well as in new application domains.
