The JoJoLands (stylized as The JOJOLands) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki, and the ninth part of the larger JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series. Set in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi in the early 2020s, it follows Jodio Joestar, a teenaged gangster intent on becoming wealthy in the subtropics. It is serialized by Shueisha in the seinen manga magazine Ultra Jump since February 17, 2023.

Plot

Jodio Joestar is a high schooler living with his family on Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi. His goal is to become incredibly rich via the "mechanisms" of daily life. Working alongside his older brother Dragona Joestar, Jodio is involved in the criminal world of his state to also ensure his mother's protection.

One day, his school principal and boss Meryl Mei Qi instructs Jodio, Dragona, and their kleptomaniac classmate Paco Laburantes to perform a heist alongside suspicious client Usagi Alohaoe.[1] The four arrive to Big Island to steal an expensive diamond from Japanese manga artist Rohan Kishibe but the gang discover something much more valuable and dangerous during their heist as other entities attempt to take the gang's new-found discovery. Jodio hints the amount of people involved in the heist would not be enough to endure what is to come.

Characters

  • Jodio Joestar[lower-alpha 1] is a 15-year-old gangster living with his family on Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, where he acts as a gofer for the state's underground drug trade. Despite his popularity among his peers, he finds it difficult to be truly happy and is diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder by his school's psychotherapist prior to the story. Using his Stand, November Rain,[lower-alpha 2] he can create raindrops with crushing force and localize them to where he needs them to be.
  • Dragona Joestar[lower-alpha 3] is Jodio's 18-year-old brother who works with him in the underground drug trade. Dragona is biologically male but presents feminine, having breast implants and wearing women's clothing. He also works at IKO IKO, a fashion boutique run by his boss Meryl Mei Qi. Dragona wields the Stand Smooth Operators,[lower-alpha 4] consisting of small robots that have the capability of displacing things.
  • Paco Laburantes[lower-alpha 5] is a 19-year-old classmate of Jodio's and part of the gang. He comes from an abusive household, having one of his ears partially bitten off by his father, and engages in theft as if it were a sport. Using his Stand, THE Hustle[lower-alpha 6], he can bulge and vibrate his muscles as well as whoever's he touches, aiding him in sleights of hand and combat.
  • Usagi Alohaoe[lower-alpha 7] is a 17-year-old classmate of Jodio's and takes part in the heist under Meryl Mei Qi's request. A frequent customer for drugs, the rest of the gang see him as a hinderance and addict. Usagi wields the Stand THE MATTEKUDASAI[lower-alpha 8] and uses it to grant wishes of anyone but himself.
  • Meryl Mei Qi[lower-alpha 9] is the principal of Jodio's school and owner of fashion boutique IKO IKO. Using the boutique as a front for her criminal business, she acts as the gang's boss and instructs them to perform a heist on The Big Island. She also requested they take Usagi Alohaoe along for unknown reasons.
  • Barbara Ann Joestar[lower-alpha 10] is the daughter of Joseph Joestar from JoJolion and the mother of Jodio and Dragona Joestar. Everyone in the neighborhood respects and assists her due to her sons' reputation in crime.
  • Rohan Kishibe[lower-alpha 11] is a successful Japanese manga artist visiting Hawaiʻi for a 15-day vacation. The heist Jodio and his gang were tasked with involved stealing a diamond from his villa. Rohan was revealed to be in Hawaii to experiment with the state's lava rocks and advises Jodio to be wary of his companions after their scuffle. Just like in Diamond Is Unbreakable and Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan, Rohan wields the Stand Heaven's Door,[lower-alpha 12] which allows him to temporarily turn living beings into books which he can freely read or write commands into.

Reception

Interest in the series' launch was enough to prompt a second printing of its debut issue of Ultra Jump – only the fourth time this had happened in Ultra Jump's history, and the first time in eleven years.[7] The first tankōbon volume debuted at the top of Oricon's weekly Japanese sales charts for print comics,[8] and was reported by Comic Natalie to have been the week's highest and fourth-highest selling comic at the bookstores Tsutaya and Comic Zin, respectively.[9]

It ranked fifteenth, along with Koori no Jyōheki, on Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list of best manga of 2024 for male readers.[10]
