該屬由瑞典生物學家卡尔·林奈於其《自然系統》第十版中建立該屬。[4][5]其屬名來自拉丁語的同樣辭彙，該詞源自希臘語的（轉寫：phoinikopteros）。[6]模式種即為同時被林奈所命名的美洲红鹳。[1]
