梅特卡夫1892年毕业于哈佛大学神学院，之后先后在佛蒙特州伯灵顿、马萨诸塞州汤顿以及缅因州波特兰担任牧师，他是一名一位论派者。
梅特卡夫独立发现了41颗小行星。此外他还独立或作为共同发现者发现了几颗彗星，其中包括23P/Brorsen-Metcalf和97P/Metcalf-Brewington。为了纪念他在天文学领域的贡献，小行星792以他的名字命名。
