源自意大利語 ,根据古希臘語 (arkhi-, 主要的) + (pélagos, 海洋)构成,为爱琴海的名称。爱琴海有很多岛屿,而“Arcipelago”原是指爱琴海的专有名词,后泛化到可以指代有很多岛屿的海,后面又到这种海中的岛屿。
