Hamilton as well as Greenback nominee Peter Lansing and former Democratic nominee Samuel H. Calhoun.[lower-alpha 1][1] Originally, the Democratic party had nominated Calhoun for lieutenant governor. On the 11th Dr. R. R. Livingston, Democratic nominee for Congress in Nebraska and S. H. Calhoun, Democratic nominee for Lieutenant-Governor, resigned their candidacy, the former because twenty-five years ago he challenged J. Sterling Morton to fight a duel, and was therefore Constitutionally ineligible. T. J. Hamilton has been nominated in Calhoun's place.
