It was the club's 30th season in the Bundesliga. Eintracht Frankfurt striker Tony Yeboah won the Bundesliga top goalscorer and scored, like Leverkusen's Ulf Kirsten, 20 Bundesliga goals.

Note: In the 21st minute Eintracht's manager Horst Heese substituted the Slovak Marek Penksa for Slobodan Komljenović who was born in Germany. Together with Okocha, Tskhadadze and Yeboah four foreign players were fielded, one more than the German FA regulations allowed back then. Heese noticed his fault and replaced Penksa after four minutes. However the match was evaluated as 2–0 with points and 2–0 goals in favour of Bayer 05 Uerdingen.
