On 7 July 2023, six people were killed and around 80 others were injured after a fire broke out in a nursing home in the Corvetto district of Milan, Italy.[1]

Incident

Just shortly after 1 A.M.,firefighters responded to the privately run, local authority owned, Casa dei Coniugi (Home of the Spouses) nursing home in Milan, Northern Italy, where a fire was burning inside on the first floor of the building. However, after a short while, the fire was put out. The fire produced toxic fumes despite the short fire. Two residents burned to death in their shared room, where the fire broke out, while the remaining four died of smoke inhalation.[1][2][3]

Five of the victims were women.[2]

The cause of the fire is under investigation but was likely an accident.[1]

Reactions

Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala said "It could have been (even) worse. Having said that, six dead is a very heavy death toll".[4]
