Novak Djokovic is the defending champion.^[1] He is attempting to break Margaret Court's all-time, all-gender record of 24 major singles titles, and to equal her all-time, all-gender record of 11 Australian Open titles. Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka were the only former champions to compete in the tournament.

Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev are in contention for the ATP No. 1 singles ranking.^[2]

A record number of seeded players (30 of 32 seeds) advanced to the second round, for the first time since the introduction of the 32-seed system at the majors at the 2001 Wimbledon Championships.^[3][4] A record-breaking opening round saw 20 matches extended to five sets, the most for the tournament since the start of the Open Era.^[5]
