The 356th infantry division was a unit of the German Army (Heer) created in Toulon France in May 1943.

Details

The unit was made from reserve units as an Gisela division. In November 1943 the 869th grenadier division was moved to the 11th Panzer Division the 870th grenadier division was moved to the 16th SS Panzergrenadier Division Reichsführer-SS and the 871st grenadier division was moved to the 352nd Infantry Division. The 256th saw service in France from May 1943 to October 1943 when the unit was sent to Italy in October 1943 were it stayed until January 1945 when the 356th infantry division moved to Austria and Hungary until the end of the war.[1][2][3]
