Career highlights and awards

Frederick Adam Peters (born May 24, 1979) is an American football executive who is the general manager (GM) for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). A native of the Bay Area, he played football at West Valley College in the late 1990s before transferring to UCLA and majoring in psychology. His NFL career began in 2003 as a college scout with the New England Patriots and later the Denver Broncos.

Peters had risen to a senior position within Denver's scouting department before he joined the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 as the vice president of player personnel under GM John Lynch. He was promoted to assistant GM in 2021, serving that role until being named Commanders GM in 2024. Peters has been regarded as one of the top player evaluators in the NFL and has been a part of teams that won six conference championships and three Super Bowls.

Early life and college

Peters was born on May 24, 1979, in Mountain View, California, and grew up in nearby Cupertino.[1] He attended Monta Vista High School, playing tight end in football and left fielder and first baseman in baseball. Peters graduated from Monta Vista in 1997 and enrolled at West Valley College in Saratoga, California, earning all-conference honors as a captain of their football team before transferring to UCLA after two years, where he was a reserve defensive end for the Bruins.[2] Citing teammates such as DeShaun Foster as being "bigger, stronger, faster, and better than me in everything", Peters decided that he was not fit to continue playing and began looking into alternate ways to remain in the sport.[3] He graduated with a degree in psychology in 2002 and worked as a graduate assistant in football operations for the Bruins that season.[1][4]

Career

Scouting

Peters worked as a graduate assistant in football operations for the Bruins in 2002.[4] During that time, he hosted New England Patriots executives Scott Pioli and Jason Licht on a UCLA scouting trip. Impressed with his knowledge of the game, Pioli would recruit Peters for a job scouting for the Patriots in 2003.[3][5] The Patriots won Super Bowl XXXVIII and XXXIX during his tenure, where he worked with staff, such as Thomas Dimitroff, Bob Quinn, Jon Robinson and Nick Caserio, that developed into future NFL general managers of their own.[3][6] Peters did pro scouting in 2005 before working as an area scout for three years.[4] He followed Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to the Denver Broncos when he was named head coach in 2009, becoming a national scout two years later.[4][7]

Executive

Peters was promoted by the Broncos to assistant director of college scouting in July 2014.[8] He was promoted to director of college scouting in 2016, with the team appearing in Super Bowl XLVIII and winning Super Bowl 50.[3][4] Peters was named vice president of player personnel for the San Francisco 49ers in January 2017.[4] It was the first hire made by GM John Lynch, who had no prior front office experience, with Peters impressing him while sitting in pre-draft meetings with the Broncos.[3][9] The 49ers would win the 2019 NFC championship and appeared in Super Bowl LIV, with him being promoted to assistant general manager (GM) in February 2021.[10] Peters had begun to garner interest from other teams as a GM candidate by the early 2020s before being hired by the Washington Commanders for that role in January 2024.[11][12] He has been regarded as one of the top player evaluators in the NFL, with him assisting in the selection of notable later-round and undrafted players during his career such as Chris Harris Jr., Malik Jackson, C. J. Anderson, Justin Simmons, George Kittle, Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga, and Brock Purdy.[3][13][14]

Personal life

Peters is married with two daughters.[15] He grew up a fan of the 49ers during their Super Bowl runs in the 1980s and 1990s, citing his favorite player as tight end Brent Jones.[16]
