Controversy
Kiršteins was criticised by members of the Latvian Jewish community for his tacit support of a controversial exhibition "Herberts Cukurs: The Presumption of Innocence". For his response, in which Kiršteins hinted at the Latvian Jewish community's collaboration with the "state's enemies" during the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940, he was expelled from People's Party.[1][2]
Award
In 1997, he was awarded the French National Order of Merit.[3]
