The Battle of Djidiouïa was a battle that took place in 1694 between the Deylik of Algiers and the Sultanate of Morocco.
Background
After the Algerians took the eastern side of the Moulouya River in 1692,[1][2] Ismail Ibn Sharif tried to reconquer it in 1693.[3] Ismail Ben Sharif saw the river's eastern side valuable, as it included cities like Oujda, Fguig, Berkane and many more, and held great economic and historical importance for the Moroccan state.[4]
Battle
Ismail Ibn Sherif dispatched an army that crossed the terrain of the Moulouya River, moving deeper into Algerian territory. The battle unfolded until they reached the pivotal point of Relizane, where they were met with great resistance from a prepared Algerian army.[5][6]
The battle ultimately saw the Moroccan forces thwarted in their attempt to dismantle Algerian cores on the eastern banks of the Moulouya River, resulting in a decisive victory for Algeria and Dey Chabane.[5]
Aftermath
After the defeat, Ismael launched 5 more attacks on the Moulouya (1696, 1700, 1701, 1703 and 1707) all ending in total failure[5] resulting in the Algerian occupation of eastern Morocco until 1795.[7][8][9][10]
