David Granirer is a counselor, stand-up comic, and the author of The Happy Neurotic: How Fear and Angst can Lead to Happiness and Success. He is the founder of Stand Up For Mental Health.
Granirer advocates for the de-stigmatization of mental illness and speaks openly about his experience with depression.[1] In his program, Stand Up For Mental Health, Granirer teaches stand-up comedy to people with mental illness. The class is intended to improve self-esteem and participants' perceptions of their mental health journeys.[2] At the end of each class, the groups perform a graduation show that aims to reduce stigma, discrimination, and prejudice surrounding mental illness, while encouraging discussion on the subject.
Granirer also teaches stand-up comedy classes at Langara College in Vancouver and is a public speaker who presents Fighting Stigma in the Workplace and Laughter in the Workplace.[3][4]
His father and grandparents were Romanian Jews who survived concentration camps.[5]
