The Embassy of the United States in Asunción is the diplomatic mission of the United States in Paraguay.

History

Paraguay declared independence from Spain on May 15, 1811, but was fraught with years of civil unrest following its independence.[1] The United States formally recognized the Republic of Paraguay as an independent state on April 27, 1852, and commissioned John M. Pendleton as Chargé d'Affaires to negotiate commerce treaties with Paraguay.[2]

Diplomatic relations were formally established on November 26, 1861, when Charles Ames Washburn presented his credentials to the Paraguayan government.[2] Paraguay established diplomatic relations with the United States in 1861.[1] Paraguay–United States relations have been historically based on cooperation, mutual interests, trade, and respect between the nations and their peoples.[3]

On January 4, 1942, both countries announced the elevation of their legations to the status of embassy. This took effect on March 31, 1942, with Señor Dr. Don Celso R. Velazquez presenting his credentials as Ambassador of Paraguay to the U.S. and Wesley Frost being promoted and presenting his credentials as U.S. Ambassador to Paraguay on April 15, 1942.[2]

The modern relationship encompasses a range of cooperative engagements in counter-narcotics, combating money laundering, and protection of intellectual property rights, and stem illegal activity in the Triple Frontier border with Argentina and Brazil.[1] The country has also been a strategic military ally, with contracts to allow the U.S. to perform joint military exercises in the country.[4] On June 29, 2023, a new embassy was opened on the same 14-acre site as the previous building.[5]
