Adopted30 April 2023

The emblem of Nusantara is themed "Tree of Life of the Archipelago" (Indonesian: Pohon Hayat Nusantara) which is inspired by the symbolism of trees from the west to the east of Indonesia, the source of life as well as abundant biological wealth. The tree of life motif can be found in various cultures in Indonesia such as gunungan in Javanese puppetry (pewayangan), kalpataru motifs in various temples such as Borobudur and Pawon, Batang Garing of the Dayak Tribe in Kalimantan, La Galigo literature of the Bugis Tribe in South Sulawesi, to the pattern on the shield of the Asmat people from Papua.[1][2][3]

Elements and meanings

The IKN symbol consists of the following elements:[1][2]

  • 5 roots symbolise the nation's ideology, Pancasila.
  • 7 trunks symbolise the seven major island groups in Indonesia. The shape of the stream symbolises a maritime society that considers the sea and rivers as a link.
  • One whole circle with 17 blooming flowers symbolises eternal independence.

Font

The writing "Nusantara" uses the "IKN Sutasoma" font inspired by the Pallawa script found on the Yūpa inscription in Kutai, East Kalimantan and is one of the oldest scripts in Southeast Asia.[1][2]

History

The Nusantara Capital Authority collaborated with the Indonesian Graphic Designers Association (ADGI) to design the IKN logo. Around 500 ADGI members sent their portfolios and CVs to be selected by the ADGI board of curators. The 10 selected designers were invited to create their best work. President Joko Widodo then selected 5 out of 10 works that have been made for public online voting through the IKN website. The winner is entitled to a prize of 185 million rupiah.[2][4]

Voting was conducted from 4 April to 20 May 2023. 10 electric bikes were raffled off to the public by providing their names and phone numbers during voting. More than 500 thousand people participated in the logo selection. On 30 April 2023, the IKN Logo was officially launched at the State Palace with the winner being Aulia Akbar from Bandung.[2][4]

Aulia Akbar is a graphic designer from Bandung and an alumnus of Visual Communication Design at the National Institute of Technology (ITENAS) Bandung in 2014. Aulia is the co-founder of POT Branding House, a graphic design consultancy company in Bandung.[2]
