The Shavliani Dynasty at its peak, 881 AD. The capital was located in Kutaisi or at that time, Kutais.

The Shavliani dynasty (Georgian: შავლიანის სამეფო), also known as the Shavliani nobility, was a prominent noble family in medieval Abkhazia or Georgia. They held significant political and military power in the region and played a crucial role in the governance of Abkhazia during their time. The dynasty was founded by John of Abkhazia, who usurped George I of Abkhazia and the rule was continued by his son Adarnase of Abkhazia until he was overthrown by Bagrat I of Abkhazia.[1][2] [3][4]

The dynasty is believed to have emerged between 871-893 AD. They eventually ascended to the throne of Abkhazia, ruling as the royal family. However, their reign was eventually challenged by the Anchabadze dynasty, a fellow Georgian royal house, who sought to assert their control over the region.

The Bagrationi dynasty managed to seize the throne of Abkhazia from the Shavliani rulers after the Battle of Kutais leading to a period of turmoil for the Shavliani family. As a result, members of the Shavliani dynasty fled to the region of Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti in Georgia to escape persecution and maintain their safety.

In order to conceal their true identity and avoid further persecution, the Shavliani family modified their surnames to variations such as Shavladze, Shavlidze, and Shavlayadze. This name change aimed to protect their lineage and avoid recognition as members of the Shavliani dynasty.
