The political status of Ichkeria is disputed between the self-proclaimed Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and the government of the Chechen Republic, under the authority of the Russian federation.
Background
Ichkeria's Independence has only been recognized by the Taliban regime of the First Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. This recognition came to the surface after the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized its independence on October 18, 2022, considering it as territory temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation and being ratified by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, being the first country to the UN to recognize its independence from Russia.[1] The Verkhovna Rada recognized the "Chechen genocide" during the two wars in the small insurgent nation at the hands of the Kremlin, adding that "they denounce the acts of colonization by the Russian Tsarate during the conquest of the Caucasus." In July, Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of the Chechen Republic, called the draft resolution "absolutely ridiculous and absurd" and recalled that Ichkeria does not exist even on paper. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki followed the recognition by suggesting recognizing the Ichkeria's sovereignty, arguing that this ethnic group has been "fighting for its independence for centuries", Kadyrov criticized the lack of recognition in the past by Europe.[2]
State | Recognition date | Grades | |
---|---|---|---|
Not implemented | Georgia | March 13, 1992 | On March 13, 1992, the President of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia, at the time removed from power as a result of the coup, while in Grozny, signed a decree recognizing the independence of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.[3] His successor, Eduard Shevardnadze, did not confirm this acknowledgment. |
1 | Afghanistan | January 16, 2000 | The partially recognized Taliban government in Afghanistan recognized the independence of Ichkeria on January 16, 2000, and an Ichkerian embassy was opened in Kabul. At the same time, Grozny acknowledged that the Taliban is not the recognized government of Afghanistan.[4] The Taliban government was overthrown in 2001, but returned in 20 years during the Fall of Kabul. |
2 | Ukraine | October 18, 2022 | The first member state of the United Nations to officially recognize its independence was Ukraine — on October 18, 2022, at a plenary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, deputies recognized Ichkeria as a territory temporarily occupied by Russia and condemned the genocide of the Chechen people.[5][6] This recognition was granted in retaliation for the Russian recognition of the pro-Russian republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.[7][8] |
