Spectrum is a two-stage orbital launch vehicle being developed by Isar Aerospace.[1] As of March 2023 Isar Aerospace is planning to launch the first Spectrum rocket in the second half of 2023 from the Andøya Spaceport.[2] Using the Spectrum rocket, Isar Aerospace is attempting to be the first European company to commercially launch a Small-lift launch vehicle to orbit.

Design

The first stage uses nine in-house developed and manufactured Aquila engines, while the second stage uses one Aquila engine.[1] The Aquila engine uses liquid oxygen and propane. In March 2023 Isar Aerospace reported having run 124 hotfires of the Aquila engine in the prior year, with testing taking place in Esrange, Sweden.[3]

A 20-year deal was signed by Isar Aerospace in April 2021 for exclusive access to one of the Andøya Space launch pads in Norway. Due to its location inclinations between 87.4 and 108 degrees can be reached from this launch site, targeting Sun-synchronous and polar orbits.[4]

In July 2022 Isar Aerospace announced that it had been selected by CNES to conduct launch operations at the former Kourou Diamant Launch Site at the Guiana Space Centre, last used for an orbital launch in 1975.The first launch is scheduled to take place from this launch site in 2024. Due to the low latitude of this launch site, it can be used for equatorial and medium inclined orbits.[5]

Launches

In 2021 deals for launches on Spectrum were announced with Airbus Defence and Space,[6] EnduroSat[7] and Astrocast.[8] A deal with Spaceflight, Inc. for a dedicated launch from Andøya in 2026 and option for a 2025 launch were announced in January 2023.[9] As of March 2023, Isar Aerospace is targeting the second half of 2023 for Spectrums debut launch from Andøya.[2]
