John Lloyd Toreliza (born September 17, 2001), known professionally as JL Toreliza is a Filipino singer-songwriter and a member of the Filipino boy group BGYO.[2] Toreliza has co-written BGYO's debut single: "The Light" (2021)[3] and "Runnin'" (2021).[upper-alpha 1][4]

Prior to his BGYO journey, Toreliza was a staple singing competitions contestant,[5] have performed as front act to local artists concerts in the Philippines[6] and have joined the first season of The Clash (2018).[7]

In 2023, Toreliza made a stage debut in Tabing Ilog: The Musical as "Rovic".[8]

Early life

John Lloyd Toreliza was born on the 17th of September 2001 and hails in Naic, Cavite, Philippines with a younger sister.[9] Toreliza grew up encircled by music,[10] where songs of Erik Santos and Sarah Geronimo were his favorites on karaoke sessions and on singing competitions.[11] Apart from singing, he was also a volleyball varsity player in school.[12] Given that he was not a dancer in the beginning, JL's audition in Star Hunt Academy weren't as exactly as his comfort zone.[13]

Career

2018–Present: The Clash (Season 1), Star Hunt Academy, and debut with BGYO

Same with Gelo Rivera, Toreliza was scouted to join the Star Hunt Academy program in 2018 and became part of "SHA Boys".[6] He and his four co-members were trained for two years under Filipino and South Korean mentors from MU Doctor Academy;[14] vocal coach Kitchy Molina; and dance coach Mickey Perz.[15] In an interview with Metro Style, Toreliza shared that he learned dancing inside the camp.[16] They were officially announced in the pre-show of PBB Otso Big Night as Star Hunt trainees on 3 August 2019[17] and debuted as a member of BGYO on 29 January 2021.[18]

On 17 September 2022, Toreliza received a birthday digital billboards in Seoul, South Korea as a prize of the fan special voting for the event "September Birthday" via star voting web application Dong-A.com's "Idolpick (아이돌픽)".[19]

Artistry

Toreliza have cited Erik Santos and Regine Velasquez as musical inspirations.[20][6]

Impact and influence

Toreliza was known as the OPM guy and the "mapanakit" (transl.something that can cause pain) balladeer of BGYO because of his soulful singing voice,[21] with Lionheartv.net saying Toreliza as a "vocal charmer".[22]

Personal life

His interest in music focused more on ballads with R&B, pop and upbeat music on the side.[23] He aspired to collaborate with Regine Velasquez, Gary Valenciano, Erik Santos, BTS; and idolizes Jungkook and V.[12] Volleyball, basketball, badminton[6] and table tennis were among of his hobbies and sports.[9] He became part of the Star Magic All-Star Games; for basketball.[24]
