"Jezebel" is a song recorded by American country music artist Chely Wright. The song was written by Rascal Flatts member Jay DeMarcus, who was formerly part of her road band, and Marcus Hummon, with the song being produced by Wright and Paul Worley. MCA Nashville released the single to country radio on December 22, 2001 as the second and final single from Wright's fifth studio album Never Love You Enough (2001). It was also her final single for the label before she was dropped.
The song reached a moderate peak of number 23 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, becoming her seventh top-forty hit on the chart.[1] The music video, directed by Trey Fanjoy, became a success on Country Music Television and later won at the inaugural 2002 CMT Flameworthy Awards for Fashion Plate Video of the Year.
Content
The song is an up-tempo "fusion of contemporary country and traditional elements" about a woman confronting another woman with whom her man has had an affair.[2]
Critical reception
Deborah Evans Price of Billboard reviewed the song favorably, comparing the song's theme to "Jolene" by Dolly Parton: "[w]hile 'Jolene' left Parton begging with the temptress to release her man, 'Jezebel' finds Wright passionately staking her claim and boldly confronting her competition." She also praised Wright's "engaging vocal personality" and the production.[2]
