Joseph Edelman (born 1955) is an American billionaire hedge fund manager. He is the founder and portfolio manager of Perceptive Advisors, a New York City-based hedge fund, founded in 1999.[1] In 2022 his foundation, the Edelman Family Foundation, was the primary funder enabling the creation of the lobbying organization Do No Harm, which opposes anti-racism education in public schools and gender-affirming care for minors.[2]
Early life and education
Edelman was born to a Jewish family,[3] the son of Isidore Edelman. His father was a renowned scientist who was a professor emeritus of biochemistry and molecular biophysics at Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons.[4] He has three siblings.[5]
Edelman earned an undergraduate degree from the University of California, San Diego and an MBA from NYU.[1]
Foundation
In 2017 Edelman and his wife founded the Edelman Family Foundation, which they co-chair.[2]
The foundation has donated extensively to a number of conservative causes which focus on opposing the teaching of critical race theory in public schools or on opposing transgender rights. These include Do No Harm, other organizations critical of trans rights such as The Manhattan Institute, as well as Parents Defending Education, an organization which opposed the teaching of the concepts of anti-racism and gender identity in public schools, and the University of Austin, a proposed "anti-cancel culture" university.[2]
The foundation previously had donated to Center for Reproductive Rights (CCR), but discontinued in 2021 because of CCR's "adoption of gender ideology".[2]
Personal life
Edelman is married to Susan Lebovitz-Edelman and lives in Orange County.[2]
