Juraj Vankulič[lower-alpha 1] (February 1 1996 - October 12 2022) was a Slovak drag performer, a nonbinary person, and one of the victims of the 2022 Bratislava shooting.
Life
Vankulič was born in Žilina on February 1, 1996 to their mother Dana, not having met their biological father. As a child they were baptised, and used to sing at a local church. They had a close relationship with their step-father and their younger brother Samko.[1]
Growing up, Vankulič went to study abroad in Denmark. They held a C2 level Cambridge English language proficiency certificate. After returning back from Denmark, they were employed at a H&M clothing store in Bratislava.[2]
Personal life
Around the age of 15, they came out as gay and later as nonbinary, using he/they pronouns. Among their interests and hobbies were poetry, dance, fashion and drag performance under the name Sue Cidal. Their dream was to move to Prague.[3]
Death
On October 12, 2022 at around 6 p.m., Vankulič was murdered near the enterance of Teplaren, a gay bar in Bratislava alongside their friend Matúš Horváth. They were the victims of the first ever terrorist attack against LGBTQ+ people in Slovakian history.[4]
