Kakolat (Hindi: ककोलत जलप्रपात) (Urdu: کاکولات گرتا ہے۔) is a waterfall in the Nawada district of Bihar, India.[1][2]

Overview

Kakolat is situated on the southern border of Bihar, and is 33 km from Nawada and 4 km from Thali Bazar. Kakolat waterfall cascades approximately 160 feet (49m), and creates a natural reservoir at its base.[3] It is located near Govindpur police station and is surrounded by lush forests.

Kakolat waterfall is a prominent tourist attraction in southern Bihar. Many festivals and shows are hosted in the vicinity all year round. Visitors often indulge in bathing in its refreshing cold waters, which maintain a consistently cool temperature throughout the year. Kakolat is celebrated for its picturesque waters and landscapes.

Role in Indian Mythology

In Treta Yuga, a king was cursed by a Hindu sage (spiritualist) to become a python and live at the Kakolat Falls. The Pandavas visited the waterfall during their exile and in doing so liberated the king from his curse. The grateful king then proclaimed that any person who bathed in the waterfall would be spared the plight of being reborn a snake, and thus, devotees began to bathe in Kakolat to escape such a fate.[4]

Another version of the mythology mentions the king being cursed to become a dragon instead of a snake, and used Kakolat as his abode. The Pandavas liberated him from this curse during their visit..[5]

According to regional folklore Lord Krishna used to bathe in these waterfalls with his queens[6]
