The Khėmtsėg culture or Khemceg culture was an Early Bronze Age culture of southern Siberia and western Mongolia, dating to 2600–2000 BCE.[2] It immediately follows the Afanasievo culture.[1]
The Khemtseg culture is characterized by the creation of the first known human-shaped stelae in Mongolia, a roundish balbal-type anthropomorphic figure holding a knife, but starting a tradition in Mongolia that would continue for several thousand years.[2] Khemtseg stelae were nearly life-sized, faced east, and were established near burial structures.[2] A more developed tradition of anthropomorphic stelae existed in the contemporary Okunev culture to the north, in the Minusinsk basin (c. 2550/2500 – c. 1900/1700 BCE).[3]

The use of stelae in the Minusinsk Basin is similar to that in Mongolia. Starting with the Early Bronze Age, stelae were erected during the Okunevo culture (c. 2550/2500-1900/1700 BCE)
