Melangkah Di Atas Awan (lit.'A Walk in the Clouds') was an Indonesian musical drama television series directed by Putu Wijaya from a screenplay he co-wrote with Eddy D. Iskandar and a story by Shanker RS. First aired on Indosiar from 11 September 1997 until the last episode aired on 5 March 1998, it stars Inneke Koesherawati, Peggy Melati Sukma, Adji Massaid, and Ronny Sianturi. This was the final television appearance of Ryan Hidayat before his death on 8 February 1997. Melangkah Di Atas Awan follows the story of Indra (Sianturi), a businessman who gave his first salary and share his feelings with his mother.

Starvision commissioned the series alongside its cast on 6 January 1997 after the success of Mutiara Cinta, Nikita, Mentari Di Balik Awan, and Harkat Wanita. The series' soundtrack features the popular song "Melangkah Di Awan" written by Dwiki Darmawan with lyrics by Iskandar and performed by Sianturi, which was received positive reviews.

Premise

The series centers on Indra, a man who works on Harun's garage, gave his first salary and share his feelings with his mother, Diah, a housekeeper who assist Haryati, a mistress. When Diah's family was not allow Indra to enter his house from the front door, he decided to stop his mother's chores. Later Haryati offers Ayu, a girl who live in the village to succeed Indra, then she fell in love with Jaya until Haryati forbids them having a romantic relationship and Jaya will instead marry to Rita, a sneaky, greedy girl.

After Haryati drove Ayu away, Rita was start to calling her boyfriend, Yudi, to succeed Ayu as the housewife. Although Yudi was knew Jaya, he refuse Rita cheat in her relationship because she did not want to insult Jaya. Indra was decided to marry Ayu, in which all of his companies grew bearing her name. Ayu and Diah always remember Indra to make his companies are not important, so Indra was struggle to find successful ways because he was obsessed to exceed Haryati's poverty.

When Mona invited Maryam to arrive at the dinner gala, her disease fared worse, while Asrul went alone. Sastro decided him to break up with Mona, then Asrul tells Jaya and Jaka were brothers-in-law. At the cafe, Yudi became a singer, then he will see Asrul, Rita, Sastro and Tita, while singing. Sastro decides that Yudi would became a successful singer while he remembers Sastro was a successful record producer. After Yudi return to home, Rita and Asrul were infidelite, resulting Jaya and Haryati felt shocked while Rita back home. At the hospital, Asrul later apologize Haryati and accused his problem.

Jaya then invites Danardi to live at his home, then he abruptly met Ayu, who was pregnant. Indra was busy to held the grand opening of his garage, while Yudi signed a contract at Sastro's record label. He notifies and invites Jaya to meet Sastro, then they give an example of a song titled "Melangkah Di Atas Awan" in which Yudi finally sing it and became the lead song on his album. Ayu praised him when the song was issued on his album cover reads "Lagu untuk Ayu" ("A song to Ayu") at the bottom, while Indra was felt frowned, making him addicted and poisonous.

Production

Casting and development

On 6 January 1997, it was announced that Starvision reveal the series' title, Melangkah Di Atas Awan, alongside its cast.[3] The cast were Inneke Koesherawati, Peggy Melati Sukma, Adjie Massaid, Ronny Sianturi, Slamet Rahardjo and Adipura.[4] Originally, Bella Saphira was cast in the series, portraying Mona, Jaya's girlfriend.[5] While Rahardjo, who portrays Sastro, states that he was a fan of Putu Wijaya and was cast in the series, because Wijaya directed it.[6] Ryan Hidayat was originally supposed to direct the series, but he was died during the filming.[7]

Music

Dwiki Darmawan and Eddy D. Iskandar wrote the main title theme for the series, marking their second soundtrack collaboration with Starvision, after Bidadari Yang Terluka. Ronny Sianturi, the role of Indra, sings the series' theme song "Melangkah Di Awan", released in 1997.[8] The main title theme was received generally positive reviews and peaked at number 5 in Aneka Top 13 Indonesian Hits, dated to 15 November 1997.[9][10]
