History
When still open country, Melton West was known as Westmelton. The land was acquired by Oliver Hume although at that time the new estate was named Westmelton. (See separate entry on Westmelton for an explanation of the name.) In 1982 the new estate was also considered to be part of Melton.
Westmelton primary school opened in 1977, and Melton Secondary school (which was part of melton opened in 1975. Both came commendably early in the growth of new housing estates. Completion of the suburb finished in 1990, with a post office not opening until 2012?.
There is a shopping centre in the middle of Melton, (1975) with an Islamic school and cultural centre, a Catholic church and learning centre, and a community centre to the south. The Melton railway station (1884) is immediately south-east of Melton West.
In recent years, developers have focused their efforts on suburbs to the further west, with very few new housing projects being constructed since.
