The Moirang Kangleirol (Meitei: ꯃꯣꯢꯔꯥꯡ ꯀꯪꯂꯩꯔꯣꯜ), also spelled Moilang Kangleilol, is a encompasses a rich collection of history, literature, folklore, mythology, legends, and other accounts that were originally associated with the ancient kingdom of Kege Moirang (Old Manipuri: Keke Moilang).[1]

In a broader sense, the terms Keke, Moirang, and Ngangoi have been used interchangeably since ancient times to refer to this ancient kingdom.[2][3]

History

Keke Kangla served as the capital city of the ancient Moirang kingdom, functioning not only as a center of political administration but also as a site for religious practices. Within the kingdom, the people would annually partake in sacred ceremonies conducted in this city.[3][4] The Moirang Ningthourol (genealogy of the rulers of Moirang), which refers to the genealogy of the rulers of Moirang, was meticulously calculated using various ancient manuscripts, including the Cheitharol Kumpapa.[3][5]

Mythology

The mythology of Moirang Kangleirol encompasses a rich tapestry of accounts, featuring a diverse array of deities and supernatural beings. Among them, the Phamlons hold a prominent position. Of particular significance is the divine harvesting festival known as Thangjing Loutaba, in which the nine gods, collectively known as the Laibungthous, and the nine goddesses, known as the Laibenthous, actively participate. This festival serves as a sacred celebration within the mythological tradition of Moirang Kangleirol.[2]

Legends

The Moirang Shayon legends form the foundation of the Moirang Kangleirol. "Moirang Shayon" refers to the seven incarnations of a God and a Goddess that were manifested under the guidance of Lord Thangjing, in the ancient Moirang kingdom. These incarnations hold significant importance within the mythology. The list of the seven pairs of incarnations is as follows:

  2. Marjing and Wangbren
  3. Koubru and Salailen
  4. Thangjing and Thoibi
  5. Wangbren and Wangol
