The Movie Artists Association (MAA) started October 4, 1993, with the collective vision and efforts of stalwarts like Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Krishnam Raju, Krishna, Murali Mohan, Mohan Babu and other senior artists. Chiranjeevi was made the maiden president of the MAA.[2]

The objectives of the MAA include the resolution of issues related to artists, arbitration of disputes between the producers and artists, and initiation of measures covering the well-being of the MAA members. During the initial days of the organization, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Krishnam Raju, Krishna, Murali Mohan, extended their services as advisors.[3] Before the full-fledged formation of the MAA, its functions were operated from the residence of Murali Mohan for a few months.

The MAA at present is administered from the AP Film Chamber of Commerce Building located at Film Nagar, Hyderabad, Telangana and the current president is Vishnu Manchu who won MAA election in October 2021 over Prakash Raj.[4][5]

History

The Telugu film industry has a 30-year history[6] associated with the welfare of its artists.[7] The Movie Artists Association was established in 1993,[8] with only 100 members and is now a vibrant organization in the Indian film industry, with a membership of close to 1000, a phenomenon in three decades.[9]

Movie Artists Association, was formed with the objective of providing support and welfare to the artists and technicians working in the film industry. It was founded with the goal of addressing issues such as payment disputes, welfare, and representation of the artists in the industry.[10] The MAA's elections in October 2021 drew the attention of the Telugu people worldwide. Vishnu Manchu was elected the president. In a very short span, Vishnu has brought in revolutionary changes in the MAA.

With rapid changes in the Indian film making and interplay and teamwork of artists, the MAA has proposals to coordinate with the Bollywood, Kollywood, Mollywood, Sandalwood and other associations of Indian film fraternity to sign memoranda of understanding on aspects covering mutual membership drives.

Governing body

The governing body of the association is responsible for overseeing its activities and serving its members. It holds office for a term of two years and is composed of several members, including a president, two vice-presidents, general secretary, joint secretary, treasurer, and other executive committee members.[11] The president is the head of the governing body and acts as its spokesperson, while the vice-presidents support the president in carrying out their duties. The general secretary oversees the administrative tasks of the association, while the joint secretary assists them. The treasurer is responsible for managing the finances of the association and ensuring its financial stability.[12]

Administrative staff

To become a member of the MAA Association, an actor must have acted in more than five films. As of 2021, the association boasts over 900 active members.[13]
