Giulia Cecchettin

Giulia Cecchettin (May 5, 2001 – November 11, 2023) was an Italian college student who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend Filippo Turetta on November 11, 2023. Her murder sparked protests against femicide and public opinion on domestic violence.[1][2][3][4][5][6] [7]

Life

Giulia Cecchettin was born in Padua on 5 May 2001 to Gino Cecchettin and Monica Camerotto. She had two siblings, Elena and Davide. She enrolled at University of Padua, where she studied engineering. During this, she met Filippo Turetta. They had a relationship for one year before they broke up. Her sister Elena revealed that Turetta was possessive; in the autumn of 2023, Filippo began to behave irrationally, confiding in Giulia that he felt depressed, did not see a future without her, and threatened suicide. Giulia and Filippo continued to go out together occasionally, and she feared extreme gestures on his part. She confided that she felt his pressure as blackmail.

Murder

In the Autumn of 2023, Cecchettin ended her relationship with Filippo, after sending an email to her university professor about dinner with Turetta at 5.15 pm on Saturday, 11 November 2023. She left home around 6 pm to go, accompanied by Filippo, to a shopping center in Marghera to buy a pair of shoes. Her family became worried because they didn't hear from her so they reported to the police.[8] A witness came forward reporting that he had witnessed a violent argument between Filippo and Guila who ask for help. The witness called the police but no avail. Later video showed Filippo Turetta beating her, first in the car and then in the parking lot until she fell to the ground bleeding. Police sent an arrest warrant to Turetta for murder and Cecchettin's body was discovered near Venice. The German police arrested Turetta.[9][10] On 25 November Turetta was extradited to Italy, with a special Air Force flight that landed in Venice, and incarcerated in the prison of Verona.

Funeral and reaction

Cecchettin's funeral was held at the Abbey of Santa Giustina in Padua, officiated by the bishop of Padua Claudio Cipolla, in the presence of approximately 8,000 people and civil and military authorities. She is buried next to her mother Monica.[11] Her father Gino made the eulogy, urging men change their attitude toward women.[12]

The film There's Still Tomorrow impacted how domestic violence affected women in Italy.[13][14]
