Neos Zygos, formerly known as Prosfyges (Greek: Πρόσφυγες, lit. 'refugees'), is a settlement located 12 km[2] northwest of Kavala[3] at an altitude of 99 meters above sea level. It is built near and west of the EO Kavala – Drama, between the villages of Zygos (South), Palaia Kavala (Southwest), Amygdaleona (North) and Polystylo (East). The settlement was created with a government grant for the housing of Expatriates Returned Pontian Greeks[4] from the Soviet Union.[5] From 1990 to 1993, 110 families were settled.[6] It is reported in 1991 to be attached to the community of Zygos.[7] According to the Kallikratis Programme,[8] together with Zygos constitute the municipal community of Zygos which belongs to the municipal unit of Philippi of the municipality of Kavala and according to the 2011 census has a population of 572 inhabitants. During the Administrative divisions of Greece with the Kapodistrias reform ("Kapodistrias" plan),[9] until 2010, it belonged to the former Municipality of Philippi.[10] In January 2022, It joined the Municipality of Kavala[11] in the Kavala regional unit, Greece after 30 years[12] and changed its name from "Prosfyges" to "Neos Zygos",[13] Since the previous name was incorrect, because most of the inhabitants were not refugees or immigrants.[14]

Sport

The village has two Athletic Associations of Freestyle Wrestling[15] (Alexander the Great[16] and Pontos[17]), And a Football team called Helidoni ( Greek: Χελιδόνι, English: Hirundo), which ceased to exist in 2017.

Infrastructure

In addition, it has a new Personal weather station,[18] which, based on information,[19] is the first station in the eastern part of the Kavala plain, as well as the first station in the network that measures the intensity of total solar radiation[20]
