Nessum Alliance is a voluntary organization, established in 2007 as HD-PLC Alliance, originally with the purpose of promoting the widespread adoption, ensuring communication compatibility, and international standardization activities of the high-speed power-line communication technology HD-PLC. In October 2023, the Alliance changed its name to the Nessum Alliance.[1] The organization now focuses on Nessum, a power-line standard based on HD-PLC.

Overview

Purpose

With the background of the rapid global widespread of broadband infrastructure, there is a forecasted additional increase in various services such as video services, IP voice communication services, and IoT data communication services. Furthermore, as a result of this trend, there is an expectation for the methods of communication that can be installed networks easily within household appliances, business information equipment, and IoT-related devices.[2]

Under these circumstances, Nessum Alliance (formerly HD-PLC Alliance) positions the Wavelet OFDM modulation-demodulation method, which was adopted in the international standard IEEE 1901 as a fundamental technology of itself. The Alliance aims through its establishment to propel the widespread adoption of the Nessum (formerly HD-PLC) communication method, enabling "easy set-ups, high-speed digital communication, and long-distance communication" and more across various communication media ("Any media") utilized with both wired and/or wireless signal, and to contribute to the creation of a human-friendly and prosperous IoT society, by propelling establishment of communication compatibility environments among network devices conforming to this method and international standardization activities.

Activities

Establishing a "simple" and "stable" communication environment

  1. Conducting the compatibility verification tests between different products by different manufacturers
  2. Raising awareness among equipment manufacturers, electrical material suppliers / construction companies / electrical installation companies / SIers, and others[3]

Appealing to the convenience of the Nessum system

  1. Activities to encourage comfortable adoption and usage of Nessum
  2. Web communication, seminars
  3. Publicity activities through social media, press releases, etc., and joint exhibition activities, and more

Propulsion activities to interconnect between consumer electronics, B2Bs, and different products in different industries

  1. Collaborating with various industry organizations
  2. Technical exchange meetings, cooperation with other alliances
  3. Sharing information about installation and usage environments
  4. Propelling standardization activities

Membership

There are several levels of its membership: Promoter/Standard/Supporter/Special.

Currently (October, 2023) there are 3 Promoters, 19 Standards, 1 Supporters and 1 Special members.[4]

About Nessum

Nessum is a communication technology that can be used in a variety of media, including wired, wireless, and underwater, using high frequencies (kHz to MHz bands). It has been standardizing as IEEE P1901c.[5][6][1]

Nessum has the following two types: wired communication Nessum WIRE and wireless communication Nessum AIR.

History

Nessum technology is based on HD-PLC, a type of power line communication developed by Panasonic in the early 2000s. HD-PLC was developed for room-to-room transmission of HD high-quality TV images at the time but later began to be used not only for power lines but also for coaxial lines and twisted pair lines, and even for wireless communication. The names "HD"(High-Definition), "PLC", and "power line communication" did not match the reality of the situation in some cases. In September 2023, Panasonic Holdings Corporation changed the name of HD-PLC to Nessum[1] to cope with these situations. In October 2023, HD-PLC Alliance was renamed as Nessum Alliance[8] according to the change.
