The New Zealand Golf Circuit was an annual series of professional tournaments held in New Zealand between 1963 and early 1980.

History

A small number of professional tournament had been held in New Zealand before 1963, the Caltex Tournament had been held annually since 1955 and the Wiseman's Tournament had been held in 1952, 1955 and 1958. However it was not until 1963 that a formal "circuit" was organised.[1] In its first season it was held in late August and September but from 1964 it was moved to a later date, generally starting in mid-November.[1][2] Initially the New Zealand PGA Championship, was not included in the circuit but from 1968-69 it was added, together with the Spalding Masters, extending the circuit into January.[3]

The circuit enjoyed considerable success for a number of years, but by 1979–80 it had been reduced to just three events.[4] From 1980 the New Zealand events were incorporated into the PGA Tour of Australia schedule and a combined Order of Merit was produced.[5][6][7]

1963

The initial circuit was organised by the New Zealand Golf Association and was held over a five-week period from late August to late September. It consisted of 7 tournaments, 6 sponsored events followed by the New Zealand Open. Two events were held mid-week.[1] There was additional prize money of £300 for the leading players in a points based system, based on performances over the whole series. 10 points were given to the winner, down to 1 for 10th place.[8] Bruce Devlin won the £75 first prize, having accumulated 55 points, ahead of Peter Thomson on 43.5.[9] The New Zealand PGA Championship, which finished on 3 October, was not included in the circuit.

1964

Following discussions with the Australian Golf Union, the circuit was moved to a later date, running from mid-November up to Christmas.[2] The schedule was increased to 8 events, starting with the New Zealand Open. The Forest Products Tournament was scheduled over 54 holes.[17] Kel Nagle won the points prize with 61, ahead of Bill Dunk on 43. Nagle was also the leading money-winner with £1,741.[18] As in 1963, the New Zealand PGA Championship, which was played in January 1965, was not included in the circuit.

1965

The schedule was reduced to 7 events.[27] The New Zealand Open finished a day late, on the Sunday, after bad weather. As a result the Metalcraft Tournament, which was played immediately afterwards, was reduced to 54 holes. Peter Thomson was the leading money winner on the circuit, with £1,568, ahead of Kel Nagle.[28] As previously, the New Zealand PGA Championship, which was played in January 1966, was not included in the circuit.

Bob Charles was the leading money winner on the circuit, with £1,595, ahead of Kel Nagle.[37] As previously, the New Zealand PGA Championship, which was played in January 1967, was not included in the circuit.

The schedule again consisted of 7 events, including the Land Rover Tournament, which was played over 36-holes in a single day.[45] The Caltex Tournament finished on the Sunday after bad weather. Bob Charles was the leading money winner on the circuit, with $3,040, ahead of Walter Godfrey.[46] The Stars Travel New Zealand PGA Championship and the 54-hole Spalding Masters, which were played in January 1968, were not included in the circuit.

There was an important change in 1968, when two events held in January 1969, the Stars Travel New Zealand PGA Championship and Spalding Masters, were added to the circuit. The schedule again consisted of 7 events.[3] The Caltex Tournament was reduced to 54 holes after bad weather.

The schedule again consisted of 7 events, including the Vonnel International, a 36-hole two-day event.[61] There was sudden-death playoff for the Vonnel International. Kel Nagle was the leading money winner with $8,925, ahead of John Lister.[62][63]
