Nguyễn Thành Chung (born 8 September 1997) is a Vietnamese professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for V.League 1 club Hà Nội and the Vietnam national team.[2]

Club career

Nguyễn Thành Chung joined the youth academy of Hà Nội T&T in 2007.[3][4][5] In 2015, he was loaned to Công an Nhân dân and scored his first goal in the First Division. Since 2016, he has returned to Hà Nội T&T[6][7] and quickly become one of the team's pillars, contributing greatly to the club's trophies, including 6 V.League 1 titles, 4 National Cup titles, and 4 National Super Cup titles.[8][9]

International career

In 2015, Nguyễn Thành Chung was first called up to the U-19 Vietnam national team. He wore the number 3 shirt during his time with the U-19 Vietnam team. At the 2015 U-19 National Football Championship, Thành Chung made 5 appearances and scored 2 goals, helping the U-19 Vietnam team win the championship.[10]

In December 2017, Nguyễn Thành Chung was first called up to the U-23 Vietnam national team by coach Park Hang-seo.[11][12] He wore the number 15 shirt in his first match for the U-23 Vietnam team in a friendly against Ulsan Hyundai FC (South Korea). In January 2018, Nguyễn Thành Chung was one of 25 U-23 Vietnam players who traveled to China to participate in the 2018 AFC U-23 Championship.[13][14] At this tournament, Thành Chung made 2 appearances, helping the U-23 Vietnam team win the silver medal.

On August 25, 2018, Nguyễn Thành Chung made his first appearance for the Vietnam national team in a friendly against Turkmenistan.[15][16][17][18] He had an impressive performance, helping the Vietnam team win 3-0.[19]

In December 2019, Nguyễn Thành Chung helped the U22 Vietnamese national team win the gold medal in the men's football event at the 30th SEA Games.[20][21][22] In the group stage match against U22 Indonesia, Thành Chung scored a header to level the score at 1-1 for U22 Vietnam in the 63rd minute.[23][24] The match ended with a 2-1 victory for U22 Vietnam.[25][26]
