The People's National Front (Dhivehi: ޕީޕަލްސް ނެޝެނަލް ފްރޮންޓް, PNF) is a political party in the Maldives.[1]
History
Former President Of The Maldives Abdulla Yameen left the Progressive Party of Maldives after an internal conflict between the PNC and PPM coalition, then decided to make his own party.[2] Yameen and other members requested to make a party on Thursday, 23 November 2023 to the Elections Commission (EC), but since Yameen is serving a sentence on a money laundering and bribery conviction he lacks the authority to.[3] After that on Sunday Abdulla Yameen's aides went to the EC to discuss the formation of the new party. There are 8 founding members of the PNF party. They are:
- Abdulla Yameen (leader and co-founder)[4]
- Zain Abdulla Yameen (legal founder)[4]
- Mohamed Jameel Ahmed (former vice president)[4]
- Abdulla Jihad (former vice president)[4]
- Ahmed Musthafa[4]
- Hussain Waheed[4]
- Adhlee Ismail[4]
- Ali Adam[4]
Due to the EC regulations, there can only be one legal founder and after discussing chose Abdulla Yameen's son Zain Abdulla Yameen. The party's name, logo, and colors were unveiled on 25 November 2023 (Saturday) night. It adopted a logo and colors reminiscent of Yameen's previous party, Peoples' Alliance (PA).[5] He was given permission to form the party and was given 3 months to submit 3,000 membership forms to the EC.[6][7] After submitting more than 3,000 membership forms to the EC therefore fulfilling all the legal requirements, the party decided to fully register after Yameen is released.[8]
