Rio Andres Gomez (born October 20, 1994) is an American professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent.

Career

Amateur

Gomez graduated from Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, Arizona. He was cut from the varsity baseball team in his senior year. Gomez attended Mesa Community College and walked on to the school's college baseball team. He then transferred to the University of Arizona and played for the Arizona Wildcats baseball team as a walk-on.[1]

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox selected him in the 36th round of the 2017 MLB draft.[2] In 2018, he pitched for the Lowell Spinners.[3]

Gomez began the 2023 season with the Portland Sea Dogs, and was promoted to the Worcester Red Sox in June.[4] He became a free agent after the season.[5]

International career

Gomez played for the Colombian national baseball team, representing his mother's home country, in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.[2] He pitched 1+13 innings of scoreless relief against the Canadian national team, striking out Jacob Robson and Edouard Julien.[6]

Personal life

Gomez is the oldest son of Sandi and Pedro Gomez, a baseball journalist.[7] He has Colombian ancestry through his mother and Cuban ancestry through his father, who passed away in 2021. Pedro Gomez predicted that his son would play for the Colombian national team six years before the 2023 WBC.[6]
