Development
In late December 2021, it was reported that Rajkumar Periyasamy would join hands with Sivakarthikeyan for his next directional. It was further reported to commence after the latter finishes his film with Madonne Ashwin, which became Maaveeran (2023).[3] On 15 January 2022, the project, which was tentatively titled as SK 21, was officially announced by Kamal Haasan, who would be producing the film along with R. Mahendran under the banner Raaj Kamal Films International and Sony Pictures Films India.[4] Harris Jayaraj,[5] Anirudh Ravichander and G. V. Prakash Kumar were reported to be in consideration to compose score for the film, until on 3 May 2023, Prakash was announced composing the score.[6] A muhurat puja was held on 5 May in Chennai with the presence of the film's cast and crew.[7]
Casting
In April 2022, either Rashmika Mandanna or Sai Pallavi were reported to be considered for the lead actress role.[8] On 9 May, the latter was announced playing the role, pairing opposite Sivakarthikeyan for the first time.[9] Lallu was cast in a pivotal role, in his second collaboration with Periyasamy after the latter's debut film Rangoon (2017).[10] Rahul Bose was confirmed to play the main antagonist in the film, collaborating with both Sivakarthikeyan and Periyasamy for the first time.[11] During the shooting in Pudicherry, a leaked picture of Sivakarthikeyan, Sai Pallavi and said-so daughter in the film was uploaded to social media. Making it so, Sivakarthikeyan would play the role of a father, and Pallavi would play the role of a mother in the film.[12]
Filming
Principal photography commenced on 5 May 2023, with the first schedule in Kashmir,[7] but the shooting was halted in mid-May due to an event happening there.[13] It later resumed in late-May.[14] The schedule concluded by 1 September.[15] The second schedule commenced in Chennai on 21 October.[16] On 9 November, the filming continued in Pondicherry.[17] Shooting resumed in Puducherry by late November. 80–percent of filming was reportedly completed by then.[18]
Music
The film's music and background score is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, in his maiden collaboration with Sivakarthikeyan and Rajkumar.[19]
