Salim Abubakar (born 6 April 2003) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for the Serie A club Sassuolo. Born in Ghana, he plays for the Niger national team.
Career
Abubakar arrived in Italy in 2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic where he joined the youth academy of Sassuolo.[2] On 1 September 2021, he extended his professional contract with Sassuolo until 2026.[3] He made 4 appearances on the bench for the senior team in 2022.[2]
International career
Born in Ghana, Abubakar is of Nigerien descent. He was called up to the Niger U23s for the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, making one appearance.[4] In September 2023, he was called up to the senior Niger national team for 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches. He debuted in a 2–0 loss to Uganda on 7 September 2023.[5]
